Cooling is used during the session, and a numbing cream can be applied beforehand for sensitive areas. The sensation settles within an hour, leaving mild warmth and redness for the rest of the day.
For hair, most areas need a course spread over several months, because only follicles in the active growth phase respond to any single session. Pigmentation and texture work is also given as a course. Anyone quoting a single sitting for a lasting result is not describing how the biology behaves.
It can be, with the right settings and an unhurried approach. Brown skin holds more pigment in the surface layer, so it absorbs more energy and is more prone to burns and to darkening afterwards. That risk is managed by grading skin tone properly, using gentler settings and testing a small area first.
The accurate word is reduction. A completed course usually leaves growth much finer, slower and thinner, and many people need occasional top up sessions afterwards. Redness, swelling and temporary crusting are usual. Less commonly there can be blistering, temporary lightening or darkening of the treated area, and rarely a lasting mark.
